The European Union's working party on data protection last week said it has gotten Microsoft to agree to make "substantial changes" to the way its Passport ID system handles consumer data.

Europeans will get more information on their privacy rights, while all users will have a greater say over how their data gets used and be informed about the quality of their passwords. Microsoft downplayed any arm twisting, saying it had already planned the two broader-reaching changes.
