Good news for those who sell on the Web: Online spending is expected to reach $204 billion this year -- a 17 percent increase over last year's total of $174.5 billion, according to Forrester Research.Despite economic woes in the brick-and-mortal world, sales of apparel, computers and autos will drive e-commerce, "the bright spot in retailing," said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, an association for online retailers that partnered with Forrester.
Among the study's other findings, far fewer of the 125 online retailers surveyed in February and March said they planned to offer free shipping as an incentive to buy (35 percent this year vs. 85 percent last year).
