Firefox Auto-Upgrade Users Become Surprise Beta TestersFirefox Auto-Upgrade Users Become Surprise Beta Testers
Users who signed up for the beta of version 1.5 a few months ago are automatically receiving upgrades to the 1.5.0.1 beta. The rest of us get it later this month.
Some Firefox users may be wondering why they are using a version of the popular open-source browser that has yet to be released.
The Mozilla Corp. says people who installed the beta versions of Firefox 1.5 and then used the auto-upgrade system to move to the final release automatically got version 1.5.0.1, a minor update scheduled to ship before the end of the month.
"You are, whether you knew it for sure or not, a beta tester," Mozilla said in its developer center.
Those who never re-installed the final version of Firefox were automatically listed as wanting to receive beta versions in the update channel. To change status, a person can run the full 1.5 installer, or by changing a file in Firefox.
Mozilla plans to roll out security and "minor polish" updates to Firefox every two months.
