Now they are going to be integrating more advanced services like pay-as-you-go and DVR-like time shifting capabilities.Being able to watch TV on a mobile device is nice, but it wouldn't be something I'd pay a monthly fee for, and I probably wouldn't use it much. That is mainly because I quit watching TV about seven years ago when i got a TiVo. I haven't seen a commercial I didn't want to see or watched a TV show on any sort of schedule since then. Now that FLO TV has some of the same features, it suddenly gets real interesting.
Rather than a monthly fee, you can now access the service when you want without having to commit to a subscription. The time shifting feature will allow you to store "popular shows" on your FLO TV enabled device. I am not sure what "popular show" means, but it sounds like you cannot time shift anything you want as a DVR allows. Still, time shifting anything is better than just watching what happens to be on at the time.
The key will be to see what devices get the service. I've been hearing about FLO TV now for just over a year but haven't really seen any devices that have it. If this is just relegated to feature phones, it will have a very limited audience. It is going to have to come to major smartphone platforms to really thrive.
Engadget has the press release from FLO TV with all of the details.
