Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and the rest of the 2,500 business and global leaders at the World Economic Forum in New York were given Compaq iPaqs by the vendor when they arrived last week. The handhelds were loaded with Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system and AvantGo software and connected to a wireless LAN. Attendees could use them for E-mail, to look up other participants, sign up for sessions, vote on issues, and get news.

The best part: When the forum ended, they got to keep the iPaqs, which sell for about $500. Participants paid $6,000 each to attend.
