In a move to drive down the cost of entry-level Unix servers and make them more appealing for edge-of-the-network functions such as Web and app serving, Fujitsu Technology Solutions is now selling its PrimePower servers with two to four 1.1-GHz Sparc64 V processors. The machines start at $7,500.

The PrimePower 250 and 450 also feature characteristics of higher-end servers, including "hardware instruction retry," which immediately retries a failed instruction at the hardware level.

The new servers also include remote system reset, boot, environment, and power control. Although Fujitsu earlier this year revealed plans to work with Intel to design a line of Xeon-based Linux servers, Richard McCormack, Fujitsu's VP of product marketing, says, "Unix will continue to be a large part of the server market for the rest of the decade."
