One of the killer assets of the Microsoft Exchange platform is that it not only syncs your e-mail, but also your contacts and calendar appointments with devices such as BlackBerrys. Gmail users, however, haven't enjoyed all these luxuries. Until today.Google has offered a product for BlackBerrys called Google Sync for BlackBerrys for a while now. Naturally, it syncs e-mail. Google has been adding to the feature list of Google Sync for BlackBerrys for some time, and now your Google contacts will sync with your BlackBerry.

This is a big deal to anyone who uses Gmail and/or Google Apps for their enterprise e-mail service. Sure, syncing with your PC is one solution to get your contacts and calendar items safely onto your device, but if you don't sync regularly, you run the risk of being, er, well, out of sync.

Google added the ability to sync your calendar items wirelessly not too long ago. This was a nice upgrade for users of Gmail and Google Apps. Today's upgprade, though, is far better: the ability to sync your Google contacts over-the-air to your BlackBerry. Google says, "This improvement offers two-way synchronization between your BlackBerry's built-in address book and your Google Apps contacts automatically over the air."

In other words, any updates you make on one will be reflected on the other.

Gmail and Google Apps are better competitors with Microsoft every day.
