Yesterday Sun Microsystems announced that it's StarOffice suite is being distributed through Google Pack. Google Pack, which already includes a robust suite of pc-based applications such as Firefox, Adobe Reader and Norton's Security Scan is available for free download from Google. The inclusion of StarOffice rounds out this suite with applications for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. Google and Sun announced they would work together nearly two years ago, but since that announcement Google has been buying up online office applications including Writely, a tool for web-based word processing and Jotspot which includes web-based tools for spreadsheets and calendars. These products would ultimately form the basis for the Google Docs and Spreadsheets offering and left some wondering exactly how StarOffice might fit into Google's office productivity picture. But for some companies online office applications simply don't offer enough of the functionality and horsepower available from the desktop-based solutions, namely Microsoft Office. The vast majority of companies are still willing to pay hundreds of dollars for the MS Office suite rather than use Google Docs for free. But while Google and Sun have not yet elaborated on integration plans between Google Docs and StarOffice, such a combination might just be the silver bullet needed to make Google a more formidable foe for Microsoft in the office productivity market. StarOffice offers the horsepower needed for more demanding users while Google Docs allows web-based access to office docs from anywhere and the ability to collaborate and share information with others online. A combination of the two could be very powerful, and with Google's passion to stick it to Microsoft whenever possible, it would likely be free!
