Google has taken the first step toward making it possible to use its online office applications even on a computer that's not connected to the Internet.Users of the Google Docs word processing module will soon be able to disconnect from the Internet, continue working on their documents in their Web browsers, and then re-sync the offline and online versions when they go back on line. According to Google, the feature is already in use by some Google Docs account holders but will be available to everyone with a Google account withing a few weeks. At the moment, the feature only works for word processing documents in English, but will almost certainly be extended to spreadsheets, calendars, and e-mail.

On Google's blog, software engineer Philip Tucker wrote, "Cloud computing is great, but you need the cloud to make it work. On an airplane, on the shuttle commuting to work, or at home when my cable modem goes down, I want to work on my documents."Wired, The Register
