The US government has written a number of apps for some of the smartphone platforms. You can get information on recalls, locations of alternative fuel stations or find the closest US embassy no matter where you are.There are 22 apps currently at the USA.gov application site, some of which are bound to be useful to you. Examples include:
UV Index - This app will tell you the UV index and air quality ratings in your current location. (Android, Blackberry, Mobile Web)
Alternative Fueling Station Locator - Find the nearest refueling station to fill up your compressed natural gas, biodiesel, electric, E85, hydrogen, liquefied natural gas or propane powered vehicle. (Mobile Web)
Product Recalls - Get the latest recall information on cars, food, drug and product recalls. (Android, Mobile Web)
My Food-A-Pedia - find out the calorie count of just about any food. There is no fat, salt or carbohydrate information though, just calories. (Mobile Web)
The problem is not all apps are available for all platforms, which would be ok if all apps had a mobile web version, but they don't. The White House app is only available on the iPhone.
There is also no way to filter the app listing to show you apps that work with your device. With 22 apps to look through, the task isn't too large, but as the number grows, it will get cumbersome.
All of the apps are free. Not free as in beer, but free as in your tax dollars paid for these already, so you might as well make use of them. From the limited look I had at them though, they seemed to do what they claimed, so start downloading or saving the mobile web shortcuts to your phone.
