Bashas' Supermarkets in Arizona just completed a five-month test in which 135 shoppers were given scanners to order via the Web from home. Online orders rose 11%.
"If it's easy, you'll tool around the site and look for more" to buy, says Bashas' Web consultant Mike Gardner. Customers scanned UPC codes from a catalog or the actual items. The data uploaded to the store's Web site and check out proceeded like any online order.
Britain's Safeway plc runs a similar program.
