Cape Coral, Fla., CIO becomes TV host to bring technology to local citizens.
A Johnny Carson come lately? Not quite. But Tom Sibley, the IT director for the city of Cape Coral, Fla., is hosting a monthly, hour-long TV show on a local cable-TV outlet to bring technology to the people. The aim of "Tech Talk," Sibley says, is to educate citizens on how technology will make living in Cape Coral--geographically the second-largest city in Florida--more exciting, rewarding, and fun.
The program, which premiered this month, won't be just talk. Future episodes will incorporate a game show into its format. High school students will field questions from local college profs about technology, with the winner getting his or her name on the Mayors Tech Cup to be displayed at City Hall. Sibley hopes to raise scholarship money for contestants.
"Tech Talk," Sibley says, will be "more fun than watching that fresh coat of paint dry in the living room." Perhaps Sibley should hire a retired Carson comedy writer.
