Hewlett-Packard pledged Wednesday to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2010 from HP-owned and HP-leased facilities worldwide to 15% below 2006 levels. HP also is looking to improve the energy efficiency of its various products, promising to set goals for improved performance and publicly report on its progress.

HP will report and verify carbon dioxide emissions from its facilities, based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the World Economic Forum's Global Greenhouse Gas Registry.

Working with the World Wildlife Fund-US on this energy-efficiency initiative, HP says it will actively participate in efforts to battle climate change. An online release states that the company is funding a project to study the effects of climate change on the wildlife and habitats of North America's Bering Sea.

''HP will be a vital partner as we address the effects of climate change in some of the world's most important wildlife habitats," said Suzanne Apple, a VP at the World Wildlife Fund, in a prepared release.
