Sprint and handset maker HTC have finally debuted the long-rumored WiMax-powered Android smartphone. It's called the EVO 4G. Think of it as an HD2 on steroids. Huge screen, fast processor, lots of sex appeal. From a sheer spec perspective, the EVO 4G has a lot going for it. Let's look at the positives.
First up, the networking stuff. It will have a WiMax radio on board along with CDMA EVDO Rev. A for 3G fallback. Other radios include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a mini HDMI port for plugging into a TV. It will offer the hotspot creator application, allowing the EVO 4G to act as a Wi-Fi wireless hotspot for up to five other devices.
It will have a 4.3-inch display with 800 x 480 pixels (same as HD2). Providing the ponies is a Qualcomm 1GHz processor. It has 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM.
It has an 8 megapixel camera (huge!), and can shoot HD video if that's your thing. It also has a 1.3 megapixel user-facing camera for video sharing/chatting.
It will run Android 2.1, with HTC's Sense user interface theme applied, making it a highly personable device.
All good stuff. Sprint didn't share pricing or availability information. It would only say "Summer". That's a lot earlier than anyone expected to see a WiMax handset actually out on the market.
