Apple sued HTC back in early March claiming the handset maker infringed on a number of its patents. HTC has now responded in kind, by filing a complaint with the International Trade Commission. HTC has a modest request - that Apple stop selling the iPod, iPhone and iPad.The patents in dispute aren't what you would initially think. Rather than be anything that involves touch screens, accelerometers, location based services or anything else cool, they are around rather mundane functions. TechCrunch has the list.

  • Method for power management of a smart phone

  • Telephone dialler with a personalized page organization of telephone directory memory

  • Telephone dialler with a personalized page organization of telephone directory memory (no, this is not a duplicate entry, it is apparently a second patent relating to the dialer)

  • Telephone dialler with easy access memory

  • Power control methods for a portable electronic device

I am sure Apple is busy with its response.

I get that these companies need to protect their intellectual rights, but this kind of stuff is a distraction to those in the company. I know the lawyers don't have anything better to do, but they will need to work with the device designers and engineers to understand how the patents work and what it is that the other guy is doing to violate the patent. Hopefully these suits will be over rather quickly and these companies can get back to slugging it out in the market place, not the court room.
