This week at the CTIA trade show, HTC CEO Peter Chou offered a few sound bites worth passing on. Among them, he calls the Nexus One a success, and says that his company will bring a Windows Phone 7 device to market by the end of the year.Despite the initial launch and what appears to be tepid consumer reaction to the HTC-made Nexus One Android phone, HTC CEO Peter Chou believes the device is doing well. In an interview with Forbes, he recently said, "[Google's] goal with the Nexus One was to really show how good Android can be. In that regard, I think it has been an achievement. Considering Google didn't do [standard] retail or marketing for it, the Nexus One is doing pretty well."
No one knows exactly how many Nexus Ones have been sold, but estimates place the number at about 150,000. Competing devices such as the Motorola Droid have sold well over one million units, but that device had a $100 million marketing plan behind it.
Since neither Google nor HTC has revealed what its forecast sales numbers would be for the Nexus One, we can only take them at the word when they call it a success. In terms of overall market penetration, though, 150,000 pales in comparison to the millions of iPhones, Droids and other smartphones being sold.
Moving on...
In the same interview, Chou talked up Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series. It seems that HTC is very excited about the possibilities with WinPho7. Chou said, "They're putting in tremendous effort to make Windows Phone 7 very appealing and competitive." Chou expects that HTC will deliver a Windows Phone 7 Series device to the market by the end of the year. That's in line with when Microsoft predicted the platform would become available to consumers.
