Image Automation Ltd., a maker of document-authentication and identity-verification software, has raised an additional $12 million in funding, which will be used to extend research and development activities, increase product production for airports and border patrol, and for sales and marketing purposes.

The Massachusetts Port Authority is deploying Image's BorderGuard software at Boston's Logan Airport. The software uses pattern and facial-recognition technology to try to match passengers to terrorist pictures stored in the Image BorderGuard system. The technology is also used to verify passenger documents, such as a driver's license or passport, using the same pattern and facial-recognition technologies.
