"The State Of Spam," by Christopher Heun, provides a good catch-up on current spam volume, its changing nature, and current enforcement activities (governmental and private sector alike). It's a must-read for anybody who deals with junk e-mail on a daily basis.What the article is short on, unfortunately, are some pointers for dealing with the curse effectively. Allow me to help. Back in 2004, I wrote a network administrator's spam-fighter guide for Network Computing magazine that detailed multiple kinds of message-sniffing technologies and discussed their placement across a distributed message-transfer network. I've been using most of these techniques (and some new ones) for several years and only get 1 to 3 spam messages through to my system per day.

Individual users are often more challenged, however, since they often have to rely on administrators who don't implement very good filters. For example, the university where my mother teaches doesn't use much spam filtering, and she suffers greatly as a result. For people like her, I usually recommend SpamAid (formerly called Outlook Spam Filter), a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook that implements many of the same filtering tools that network administrators rely on, but within the confines of the Outlook e-mail client.
