George Mason University's Center for History and New Media is creating a digital collection of personal narratives, documents, video and audio recordings, photos, and related items about the Columbia disaster. The center created a similar Internet archive related to the Sept. 11 attack.

More than 30 snapshots of news sites from the day of the tragedy are on the Columbia archive along with comprehensive lists of articles and government documents about the shuttle and mishap.

The center issued a statement saying that the Internet is the best medium for such archives. It reaches an international audience, and will help future historians and researchers tell today's tale. The project's primary purpose is to use the Internet to collect and digitally archive oral histories relating to science and technology.
