Even though the iPad isn't yet available to most people, Apple has launched the official list of iPad-optimized applications in the iTunes Apps Store. The new applications have appeared in a set of pages reserved just for the iPad, but they are still viewable from the iTunes Music Store itself. There are hundreds of apps, including some that have been big hits on the iPhone, such as Twitterific, Reuters, USA Today, eBay and others.

Concerned about pricing? Well, many are free. There are plenty of apps, however, that cost $0.99, $4.99, $9.99 and, yes, even $19.99.

Because the sample is so small (1300+ apps at launch), it's hard to gauge what the eventual mix of free versus cheap versus expensive apps will fall. Apple is charging $10 for its iWorks apps if bought separately.

What makes an iPad app an iPad app? Well, iPad apps have been optimized for the iPad's larger screen and resolution. They have also been given tweaks to make use of the iPad's improved drop-down controls. Native iPhone and iPod Touch apps will work, too, but they will appear smaller on the screen.
