Extending the iPad phenomenon from its high-profile executives to mainstream employees, SAP is equipping 1,000 of its workers with iPads running a range of enterprise applications, including SAP's own BusinessObjects BI tools, reports winshuttle.com.From the article:
SAP chief information officer Oliver Bussman recently reported the company has distributed more than 1,000 iPads to its employees. The devices are equipped with a number of applications including SAP data management solutions suite BusinessObjects and corporate email access.
Bussman, who made the announcement through his Twitter account, said the iPads are deployed evenly among the 48,000 people the company employs worldwide. Furthermore, the number is expected to grow substantially as mobility becomes increasingly important to SAP.
If the company's criterion for expanding its enterprisewide deployment of iPads is whether "mobility becomes increasingly important to SAP," then that should happen pretty darned quickly because SAP has distinguished itself among all enterprise-IT vendors as the most bullish about the immediate importance of the mobile platform for knowledge workers.
And doing a back-of-the-napkin analysis, I would estimate that of SAP's 48,000 employees, approximately 47,229 qualify as knowledge workers.
On top of that, since SAP CEO Bill McDermott has become a highly vocal user of and evangelist for the device, it probably won't be long before lots more SAP workers are doing their work on the iPad.
