It's barely 48 hours out of the gate and already those who bought the Apple iPad are reporting a serious flaw: poor Wi-Fi reception. Without the Internet, the iPad is DOA.The discussion board on the Apple Web site is already rife with complaints about non-working or barely-working Wi-Fi. One user notes, "Wifi reception seems weak with slow downloads. Getting one bar while my MBP getting a strong signal."

That user isn't alone. I noticed last night that the Wi-Fi signal indicator on my iPad had dropped to just one bar -- as I was sitting five feet from my Wi-Fi router. My laptop, which was right next to me, showed full signal strength. I decided to test it out around my house to see what gives.

Using both my MacBook Pro and iPad, I walked all over my house. No matter where I took it, my MacBook Pro exhibited a full-strength connection to my Wi-Fi router (which is centrally located on the first floor of my house). The laptop has no problem in the basement, second floor, my attic, nor even outside (and my house is made of stone.) The iPad's connection ranged all over the place. It never dropped the connection completely, but it displayed only one bar of signal strength most of the time.

Internet browsing speeds varied greatly, and app downloads were sometimes slow. I'd say there's a definite problem here.

Others users noted:

"My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location. "

"Yes, I'm having the same issues. I reset the network settings and/or shut down and then it works great for a few minutes and then I get hung up."

"I have also noticed very weak wifi signal in my 16GB iPad. Even when standing in front of the wlan router the signal fluctuates from strong to very weak. The router has very strong signals as every other computer here has full signal strength, even 20-30 meters from the router. So there is definitely a wifi signal issue here with the iPad. "

Can a software update fix the Wi-Fi issues? The answer to that depends on what the root cause of the problem is.
