With the release of the iPhone 5 just over a month away, carriers and retailers such as Best Buy, Target, and Radio Shack are lowering iPhone 4 and 4S prices. Carriers Verizon and AT&T are maintaining full price, but Sprint has begun discounts on the 4S and Apple is quietly matching discounts.

Since the iPhone 5 is reportedly about a month from being announced--and it won't be much longer to general availability (are you in line yet?)--iPhone 4 and 4S sales are starting. We are seeing an increase in discounts on the current models.

Sprint has cut prices of the iPhone 4S 16GB to $149.99, 32GB to $249.99, and 64GB to $349.99. These are with a two-year plan.

Retailers have been discounting the iPhone 4 for a while now, with Best Buy being the latest to drop the 8GB iPhone 4 to $49.99 with a two-year contract. Radio Shack and Target have already given similar discounts. Target also is offering $20 off the 16GB iPhone 4S. Prior history indicates that the iPhone 4, while still supported, will come off the market when the iPhone 5 is available.

Officially, Apple, AT&T and Verizon are all still setting the iPhone at standard prices, but MacRumors recently reported that Apple is quietly matching discounts when customers come in and they have the poor-quality photo to prove it:
