Without explanation, the Chinese government on Sept. 12 lifted the ban it had imposed about two weeks earlier on access to Google within China's borders.
Under the ban, when Google users among China's 30 million Net surfers tried to access the search engine, they were redirected to a highly censored, weaker engine favored by authorities. Chinese Web users like Google because it does a superb job of uncovering Chinese-language material on the Web. In fact, a company spokeswoman says, those users gave Google the news that the ban had been lifted.
