JVC announced today that it has developed a new technology for combining Blu-Ray and DVD in the same ROM disc.

The new discs use proprietary reflective film developed by JVC and three layers to support both formats in a single media.

The combo disc supports all existing DVD data formats

The main benefit of the technology, according to JVC, is that it serves as a bridge format between DVD and Blu-Ray. Companies can release single discs that support both. Consumers with DVDs can buy movies that will still play on any Blu-Ray players they may buy in the future.

The first generation of combo discs will hold 33.5 GB of data, according to the company, but a future version will hold 58.5 GB.
