Frank Thomas-Mears had no choice this summer but to approve deployment of an online backup and recovery service. As president of Alaskan insurer Multiple Risk Managers Inc., he had to comply with state regulations that require transactions, phone calls, E-mail, and presentations that culminate in a sale be archived for five years and available upon request within two business days. "It's quite a burden, and we're bound by law to do this," he says. "But it's also very important to do this for our customers."

Multiple Risk turned to LiveVault Inc., and Thomas-Mears likes how the online backup and recovery vendor meets disaster-recovery requirements and serves as a trusted third party for long-term archiving. "LiveVault lets us recover data in between five minutes and two hours," he says. "Before, using tape rotation, it took no less than 24 hours, and we usually lost data during the rotations."

LiveVault this week unveils a version of its software and service with Microsoft Exchange and Windows 2003 support and enhanced recovery. LiveVault 4 is supposed to automatically detect, create, and maintain policies required to protect Exchange files. Network-attached-storage customers should see a 100% boost in data-recovery speed. User enhancements include desktop help features and compatibility with the latest third-party antivirus products.
