Online grocer Webvan Group Inc. has shut its doors and is declaring bankruptcy. The remaining 2,000 employees were released from their jobs and given 80 hours of severance pay.

CEO Robert Swan could not be reached for comment, but did issue a prepared statement that read in part: "Webvan has weathered numerous challenges, and in a different climate I believe that our business model would prove successful. At the end of the day, however, the clock has run out on us."

The company's Web site was down Friday morning and callers to its toll-free phone line heard a recording saying that as of July 9, Webvan had ceased operations. Any pending orders would not be filled, nor would customers be charged for them.

"Everyone is leaving a little bloody, but with heads held high," says company spokeswoman Amy Nobile (one of the few people still working for the company). "In hindsight, I do think we'll have been viewed as one of the trailblazers."
