A 21-year-old British university student whose brainstorm has netted nearly $1 million is auctioning off the last slice of his Million Dollar Homepage on, of course, eBay. As of Tuesday morning, bids had topped $160,000 for the 1,000-pixel block.

Alex Tew, who first made news in September when he launched the Million Dollar Homepage site and started selling ad space for $1 per pixel, said in the eBay listing that "the winning bidder will not only win the last 1,000 pixels on the homepage, they will also receive a huge amount of publicity associated with winning this eBay auction and my site finally reaching the million dollar mark."

The auction is set to end Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 1:42 p.m. EST, 10:42 a.m. PST. The best bid early Tuesday was $160,109.99; according to the listing, the current high bidder is Canadian, and an eBay member since 2000.

Earlier in the auction, Tew limited bidders to those he had pre-approved and deemed serious. "There were some fake bids (eg. exceptionally high bids) made so I'm tightening up the pre-approval process," he said on his blog.

Tew also wrote Sunday that he plans to defer his next term at university until September due to the hoopla surrounding his growing fame. "This will give me time to organize my life, consolidate my financial position (eg. pay the taxman!) and explore some of the new opportunities that have presented themselves."
