Images have appeared of what purport to be a new Android device from Motorola. One quick glance is all it takes to discern that this device is a non-keyboard version of the Droid. Closer inspection, however, reveals a truly unique feature: an HDMI out port.If the Motorola Droid lost its keyboard and were that much thinner, I'd probably call it 2009's best smartphone. By the looks of some spy shots, the Motorola Sholes Tablet might just steal that moniker for 2010.
Many of the basic specs of the Sholes Tablet match that of the Motorola Droid. It boasts the same 550MHz OMAP TI 3430 processor, 3.7-inch touch display with 800 x 480 resolution, and Android 2.0.
What sets it apart are several upgrades. The first is an eight megapixel camera with xenon flash. The Droid has a five megapixel shooter. The most interesting feature is what appears to be an HDMI out port. HDMI is the current standard port for delivering high-definition video and sound from sources such as blu-ray players and high-def set top boxes to HDTVs. The Droid can record video at 720p at 24 frames per second (that's high-def quality). By including HDMI out on a device such as this, users will be able to more easily share the videos they capture with friends and family. Many point-and-shoot digital cameras are beginning to come with this feature.
Motorola hasn't officially introduced this phone at all, and it appears as though it is bound for GSM-based networks, as it has UMTS/HSDPA radios on board. That means it won't be landing at Verizon or Sprint any time soon.
