Early last month, LinkedIn announced a few updates to its mobile app that help you take advantage of "in-between" moments, it said, such as waiting for a meeting to start or a train to arrive. One of those updates included the ability to search for jobs on the go.

Starting Monday, you can not only search for jobs, but apply for them too, directly from your mobile phone.

According to Vaibhav Goel, associate product manager at LinkedIn, nearly one-third of members who view jobs on LinkedIn are doing so from mobile devices. "We're seeing members who never view jobs on the desktop, viewing and saving jobs on mobile [instead]," Goel said.

In developing its latest update for iOS and Android, Goel said that many users asked for the ability to apply directly from mobile devices. But because managing and editing resumes on small screens can be difficult, LinkedIn's latest changes let you apply for jobs without a resume attachment. Instead, you use your LinkedIn profile in place of your resume.

Here's how it works:

First, open your LinkedIn app and click the "Jobs" tab to search for a position that meets your requirements. Every job listing will offer the option to either "Apply" or "Save" for later. Note that some job listings may have an "Apply on Company Website" button instead; in these cases, the company requires you to apply on its corporate career site.

Once you click Apply, LinkedIn will let you know if parts of your profile are incomplete. You'll have the option to edit your profile directly from the app before submitting your information. If your profile is already up to date, click the blue "Next" button on the top.

On the final screen, LinkedIn will prompt you to confirm your contact information, including your email address and phone number. LinkedIn says these fields are auto-populated based on information you've already provided on your profile. If they are out of date, you can edit your information to ensure the company has accurate contact details.

When you've confirmed your contact information, simply tap the "Submit" button to complete the application process.
