Professional networking site LinkedIn has gone live with the beta version of its business directory, which indexes more than 160,000 companies and organizations.LinkedIn Company Profiles is "a new research tool that helps you find and explore companies that you might want to work for or do business with," according to a blog post from a LinkedIn software engineer. The directory is based on LinkedIn's member information as well as data culled from BusinessWeek and Capital IQ, the financial information services arm of Standard & Poor's. Data is displayed in company profile pages, which include an overview of each company's industry data along with key metrics.

The directory if free, but requires users to sign in to view the information. Next in line: LinkedIn says it plans to "wiki-fy" company profiles so that employees can modify the information.Computerworld, TechCrunch
