Stocks opened higher on Tuesday and stayed that way throughout the day as investors went shopping for good buys following Monday's sell-off.

Tech stocks rallied strongly. Our information 100 closed as the highest percentage gainer for the day. It closed up 4.31, or 1.5%, to end at 301.96. The Nasdaq rose 21.18, or 1.1%, to close at 1,897.82. The Nasdaq tracking stock was up 38 cents, or 1.1%, to close at $34.42 on lower-than-average volume of about 87 million shares.

The Dow Jones industrials and S&P 500 also posted gains. The Dow closed at 9,968.51, up 61.60, or 0.6% for the day. The S&P 500 closed up 7.4, or 0.7%, to end at 1,091.53.
