Over-the-air system updates are part of the new smartphone landscape. Nearly every device released in the last few years has seen at least one software upgrade. With more advanced devices hitting the market each week, the pace is sure to continue unabated.

Motorola Droid Gets Android 2.2...For Real

Verizon Wireless promised that it would deliver Android 2.2 Froyo to the Motorola Droid beginning the week of August 2. According to a company spokesperson, it targeted a small number of users first to make sure the update worked first. There must have been a few kinks, because the update wasn't pushed to the masses until the early morning hours of August 11. The update can be installed over-the-air directly from the handset. Users will be notified when the update is ready.

A manual update for the Droid, build FRG01B, was made available via non-official channels last week. Though that update works, it is not the final version of Android 2.2 being offered to the Droid. The final software version is build FRG22. If you updated your device manually to FRG01B, make sure your device eventually updates to FRG22.

HTC EVO 4G Android 2.2 Fix

Here we have pretty much the same story as outlined above, only change out the Motorola Droid for the HTC EVO 4G. Sprint began pushing out Android 2.2 to the HTC EVO 4G last week, too. An unofficial Android 2.2 build was made available and downloaded by a number of users. The unofficial Android 2.2 build was version 3.26.561.3. The new and final Android 2.2 build is version 3.26.561.6. HTC EVO 4G customers who downloaded the .3 version can get the .6 version by using the settings menu on their handset.

Palm Pushes webOS 1.4.5

Tired of all the Android 2.2 updates? Here's something different. Palm is finally offering webOS 1.4.5 to the Sprint Pre and Pixi owners. What's new in webOS 1.4.5? Not a whole lot. According to Palm and Sprint, webOS 1.4.5 includes bug fixes and some minor feature improvements.

The changelog notes: Web podcasts download correctly; Correct entry of text on Web; Sprint branded default email signature corrected; Run games and applications developed with webOS PDK; Send video via multimedia messaging from Video application; Video trim feature now works to send in a message; and SprintTV upgrade to V 3.5.4 and enhanced parental controls.

Palm hasn't indicated of or when the Verizon Wireless or AT&T variants of the Pre and Pixi will be updated to webOS 1.4.5.
