Microsoft is running a pair of job postings this week that point to the company's plans for a new addition to its Xbox console franchise, which turned 10 years old this past November.

One ad seeks an individual who can help "revolutionize audio for the next-generation Xbox." According to the description, the position's primary responsibilities "will include development of the core audio stack for the next-generation Xbox console."

The successful candidate will need "exceptional C++ coding skills, familiarity with WASAPI and the Windows audio stack, and a passion for audio."

For the other position, Microsoft is looking for an individual to spearhead the creation and launch of a major video game franchise. This has pundits speculating that the company wants to ship a new blockbuster title to support the introduction of the long-rumored Xbox 720.

The ad seeks an executive producer for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business group. It reads: "Microsoft Studios (Xbox) is looking for a dynamic and seasoned Executive Producer to lead and develop a world-class team who will own the creation and delivery of a AAAA experience that delivers on 1st party goals and, more importantly, creates a fun gaming experience for our audience."

The job description continues, "The EP will be responsible for identifying a great development partner who shares our passion and goals, mapping the product roadmap, all aspects of production, from initial concept development through retaining world-class production capacity to delivering high-quality games that are on time and on budget, and improving the viral performance of the games."

The fact that Microsoft is looking to build premium audio performance into the Xbox 720 is consistent with its plans to move the console beyond gaming and make it a full-blown entertainment hub for streaming movies and other content. The addition of Skype technology could also make the Xbox 720 a base for phone calls and videoconferencing.

Microsoft has not confirmed a launch date for the Xbox 720. Many observers expected it to be revealed at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but that didn't happen.
