Today Motorola announced its first Android handset, called the Cliq. The Cliq is a sideways slider with a full touch screen and QWERTY keyboard. It also features Motorola's new contact and social networking service called MOTOBLUR.I have to be honest, the crowd here at the GigaOM Mobilize Conference seemed a bit underwhelmed by Motorola's announcements today.

First, Motorola announced MOTOBLUR. From my perspective, it is exactly like Palm's Synergy contact management system. It combines the information from all of your address books and social networks (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace) and merges it into one place to reach out to your friends, family and coworkers.

Motorola co-CEO said that getting the right message to people at the right time was more important that the medium through which that message is sent. In other words, no matter how you want or need to reach someone, the opportunity is there. MOTOBLUR will sent a live stream of updates from friends and contacts to a homescreen widget on the first Motorola Android handset, named the Cliq.

The Cliq is a sideways slider that has a full QWERTY keyboard and touch screen. Specs include a 5 megapixel camera, 3G (for T-Mobile), Wi-Fi, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and video capture at 24 frames per second, 3.5mm headset jack and tight integration with Google's services.

The Cliq will be available form T-Mobile later this year.

The device received a luke-warm reception at most from the packed audience here at the conference. Granted, we didn't get to see too much about it, but Jha was sure to note that this is the first step from Motorola as it takes the long road back to recovery.
