Earlier this week, Google announced a new version of Maps for Mobile for the Android platform. That software went live in the Android Market today and offers Motorola Droid users a hidden feature: multitouch.We know that Android 2.0.1 (and the display in the Motorola Droid) support multitouch. To this point, it hasn't been enabled. The Google Nexus One received a big multitouch update earlier this week. Users of the Nexus One can experience multitouch in the browser, Google Maps, and picture gallery. Many Droid owners cried foul, wondering why they were being left out.
Today, Droid owners will get some reprieve. The new version of Google Maps enables multitouch.
I attempted to download the new version of Maps for Mobile to several other Android handsets, including the HTC Hero and HTC myTouch 3G. Neither was able to access the new version of Google Maps with multitouch. So those of you running older Android handsets, sit tight.
In the mean time, here's a demonstration of what multitouch looks like on the Motorola Droid.
