Motorola Wednesday launched the MC75A0-HC, a rugged and disinfectant-ready mobile device to help nurses and other clinicians improve patient care and safety as well as support a variety of point-of-care applications such as electronic health records (EHRs).

The MC75A0-HC enterprise digital assistant (EDA) provides users with the ability to electronically input, access, capture, and instantly transmit patient data and information related to hospital business systems. The device enables healthcare providers to perform a variety of tasks including accurately administering medications, monitoring patient vital signs, placing pharmacy and lab orders, collecting and tracking specimens, administering blood transfusions, and accessing test results.

The device comes with a 3.2-megapixel autofocus color camera, enabling users to capture high-resolution photos, video footage, and documents to improve operational efficiencies and enhance clinical insight.

Vivian Funkhouser, principal of global healthcare solutions at Motorola Solutions, said the new product, which will cost around $2,000, broadens the firm's portfolio of solutions that address the needs of mobile workers in rigorous healthcare environments. She also said the product extends the access of critical information to the patient's bedside, the nurse's station, operating room, and beyond.

"The MC75A0-HC for the healthcare vertical is part of a nursing solutions mobility suite that we have for the marketplace that really focuses on patient-centric care," Funkhouser told information.

"Ours is a one-device, multi-function philosophy for our EDAs and the new MC75A0-HC certainly fits in that philosophy of being very robust, having good memory for data management, and allowing nurses to access other systems such as the electronic medical record, an online drug library, and research on drug interactions and allergies for patients," said Funkhouser.

The MC75A0-HC also works with Motorola Integrated Voice Solutions, including the TEAM Express voice client to deliver instant push-to-talk communications between the MC75A0-HC and other mobile devices providing one-to-one and one-to-many voice communications across workgroups.

To address security concerns for patient records, the MC75A0-HC incorporates government-grade security for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance and native Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 1 certification and support.

The MC75A0-HC was designed for the rigors of the modern medical environment. It can tolerate regular exposure to the harsh cleaning agents commonly used in infection-control procedures to prevent the accidental spread of germs and diseases. With MIL-STD 810G and IEC specifications for drop, tumble, and sealing, the device can withstand five-foot drops to concrete and exposure to water and dust, reducing repair requirements and downtime and providing best-in-class total cost of ownership, said Motorola.
