Verizon Wireless and Motorola have said that the Droid X will be offered the Android 2.2 update in "early September." An unofficial version of Android 2.2 for the Droid X, however,` has been leaked to the Internet. Motorola warns Droid X users to stay away.

Motorola employee "Matt" said in a support post, "Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the [internet]. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version."

The unofficial version of Android 2.2 that has been leaked for the Droid X is not the final version. It likely has some minor bugs. In the same support post, Motorola references a number of known issues that the company is working to fix for the Droid X (full list at end of this post).

Since Motorola isn't going to provide an update path from the leaked ROM to the official, final ROM, I'd highly recommend Droid X users sit this one out. It shouldn't be more than a week or two before the final version of the software is available. It's not worth getting stuck with a buggy ROM.

In other Droid X news, owners of the Android device have been disappointed to learn that the HDMI port only works when the Gallery application is being used. That means no streaming video content from some applications (such as SlingPlayer) to HDMI-equipped TVs or monitors.

To circumvent this issue, a company called GmanApps has created an application called Real HDMI that unlocks the HDMI port for use with other applications. Real HDMI costs $1.99. Given the functionality that it provides, some might call that $1.99 well-spent.

You may not want to use Smart Profile! Some owners are finding that Smart Profile isn't working correctly. In these cases, if you use it to set your phone on vibrate (by turning a ringing phone over, face down) your phone won't ring anymore. Only a factory reset will restore the ringtone. It's being discussed here. If you have this problem, here is some information on doing a factory reset. just use these new, pretty simple recovery steps. There is some evidence this doesn't happen to everyone and it definitely doesn't happen every time you use the Smart Profile. This will be addressed in our next software update.

Deleting text message content. We have followed this discussion with interest and recognize that saving text content history is not always a great experience. We’re going to make a change in our next software update. You will be able to permanently delete text messages. Thanks for this feedback – we heard you.

Notification volume: After reading and hearing reports about the notification volume being too low on Droid X, we are now planning to increase the volume in an upcoming software release. Thanks for your feedback.
