Neither Verizon Wireless nor Motorola have reported official sales figures for the Droid smartphone, but estimates place current sales between 700,000 and 800,000. That makes reaching the one million units sold milestone (pun intended) within Motorola's grasp.Initial estimates made by Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie pinned Motorola Droid (a.k.a - Milestone) sales at about 600,000 by the end of 2009. Perhaps McKechnie neglected to consider Verizon Wireless's $100 million (yes, $100 million) advertising campaign pushing the Motorola Droid as Verizon's alternative to the iPhone.

The commercials, billboards, and web ads are everywhere. On my way into New York City this morning, the Verizon billboard that's next to Route 495's corkscrew entrance into the Lincoln Tunnel read: "Motorola Droid - A Bare-Knuckled Dose Of Does". There's no doubt that Verizon is betting a good number of its advertising chips this holiday season on the Motorola Droid.

So Verizon and Motorola both should be happy with RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue's latest estimates, which place sales of the Droid already between the 700,000 and 800,000 mark. The Droid went on sale November 6. It's only been three and a half weeks (26 days). There are 31 days left in 2009. If the Droid sales keep their current pace, it should be able to surpass one million units sold before Christmas, let alone New Year.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about the Droid. It's 50% awesome and 50% awful. Think it might be for you? Well, you need to decide which 50% is more important.
