Today, during a closed roundtable discussion with the press, Motorola's Christy Wyatt said that the company does not plan to support the current generation of Windows Mobile software at all. Instead, it is waiting for the next generation before it chooses to begin making Windows Mobile devices again.
When pushed for a clarification, Wyatt indicated that Windows Mobile 6.5 is not on Motorola's road map at all.
Wow.
Motorola today said at the MOTODEV Summit that it is going to focus all of its efforts on two major smartphone platforms. One of them is definitely Android. In fact, Motorola spent much of the morning wooing Android developers in an attempt to curry their favor and convince them to design apps for Android and Motorola. Wyatt indicated that the jury is out on what other platform it will support.
Motorola has been a Windows Mobile shop for as long as I can remember. For such a prominent partner to publicly say that it is sitting out on this version if Windows Mobile is a harsh indication of just how irrelevant the current generation of software from Redmond is.
