More pieces of the emerging 4G wireless puzzle are being revealed this week at the LTE World Summit 2009 in Berlin.

Motorola launched its self-configuring Long Term Evolution, or LTE, wireless infrastructure solution, while CEVA and Aricent demonstrated a LTE PHY handset platform.

With LTE scheduled to make its major U.S. debut late this year by Verizon Wireless, the Motorola infrastructure solution will be available to all carriers as they race to implement the new generation of mobile wireless deployment. Motorola said the self-organizing network, or SON, which is included in its new WBR 500 base station infrastructure, deploys quickly without the need of specialized technical expertise.

"With our advanced SON, Motorola helps operators get the best performance from their network while lowering their operating expenses to deliver true mobile broadband," Paul Steinberg, chief architect of wireless infrastructure for Motorola Home & Networks Mobility, said in a statement. Steinberg said SON will deliver extra network capacity at lower price per bit.

The self-organizing SON network features self-configuring, self-operating, and self-optimizing LTE infrastructure that is 3GPP Release 8 standards-compliant. Its ease of use and cost savings are attributed in large part to the automaton of previously manual steps involved in deploying and operating networks.

The CEVA-Aricent partnership has produced an LTE PHY handset platform that the companies say will accelerate LTE terminal and infrastructure equipment manufacturers' time-to-market efforts.

"CEVA's programmable DSP [digital signal processor] cores combined with Aricent's software solution accelerates development and reduces risk for customers, allowing them to focus on their core competencies," Ajeet Velankar, Aricent's business development director, said in a statement.

CEVA is demonstrating its DSPs that run several LTE physical layer functions in software supported by Aricent's modular implementation of LTE features.
