According to the Verizon Wireless Web site, it has exhausted its first batch of Motorola Droid X handsets. If you wish to order it, you're going to have to wait at least a week, as the Verizon site says that it won't ship until July 23.

At least one Web site, PhoneArena.com, also says that many stores are sold out of Droid X units as well. PhoneArena called a number of Verizon Wireless retail stores on Thursday, July 15, and were unable to find any stores with the Droid X still in stock.

The Verizon Wireless retail store employees that PhoneArena spoke to noted that the stores received between 40 and 50 units each, and most were sold out by Noon. Those employees suggested that customers interested in the Droid X should either order online, or swing by a store and order it directly from the store.

When Verizon Wireless doesn't have devices in stock at its retail stores, it often FedExes them over night for next-day delivery. That could be the best way to score a Droid X if you don't want to wait until July 23.

Verizon Wireless said this morning that its inventory is low, but it is not completely sold out across the country. A spokesperson said, "Customers have been enthusiastic about the launch of the Droid X by Motorola and inventory is either out or very low in some parts of the country. Customers may continue to order their phones and our expectation is the phones will ship on or before July 23. We have weekly shipments scheduled." (Emphasis mine.)

I called two local Verizon Wireless stores. Both reported to me that they sold through their inventory of Droid X units yesterday, but were expecting more units this morning.

Earlier this week, Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney told CNet in an interview, "While we are currently experiencing delays on orders of [the HTC Droid Incredible]. We view that as an anomaly driven by a combination of supply and popularity. At present, we feel that we have done everything possible to ensure we have inventory to meet customer needs around the Droid X -- the proof will be in the execution on July 15."

Turns out that things didn't go quite as smoothly as Verizon Wireless had hoped. Not only did the device sell out at many stores, there were also activation delays. Some customers reported leaving the devices with only voice service activated, leaving the Droid X truly just a phone and unable to access the Internet.

Verizon Wireless has not made any official announcements about the number of first day sales.
