NEC Corporation announced today that has successfully created an all purpose storage device that uses a single optical head to play back HD DVDs, DVDs, and CDs. The drive will be shown at the Jan. 6 CES show in Las Vegas.
The head technology was created using blue, red and infrared lasers that all use a single lens and a single microprocessor controller.
HD DVD is a blue-laser DVD format proposed by Toshiba and Sanyo with four times the capacity of today's DVDs.
The company expects to put the new drive (yet to be named) on the market some time next year.
