New York state is building a secure counter-terrorism network, designed by IBM, to let the state's law-enforcement agencies share critical intelligence instantaneously.
A pilot network was launched last week that sends electronic alerts to recipients on flat-panel PCs. Eventually the network will enable two-way communication between the state's 543 law-enforcement agencies and police departments at a cost of about $2 million.
In a related move, New York Gov. George Pataki last week named James Dillon to be the state's first CIO. He'll coordinate technology policies for all state agencies and public authorities.
