Add the National Hockey League's NHL.com to the list of sites charging for premium content. The NHL, which had offered free clips from the previous night's action, has added a video-subscription service, NHL Highlight Machine, that lets fans use drop-down menus to access the league's video library for $5 a month.

The service uses streaming technology from Speedera, video servers from CinemaNow, and digital-rights management software from Microsoft. Says Ryan Hughes, the NHL's director of new media business development, "We fully expect to make money."
