San Francisco's downtown sidewalks typically overflow with shoppers this time of year, but maybe the holiday crowds are proving too much for some. A survey of 7,000 online shoppers nationwide commissioned by America Online finds that San Franciscans will spend an average of $399.20 online for holiday gifts this year, more than any other metropolitan area. Holiday shopping online also plays favorably in Nashville, Tenn., and Miami. Nationwide, 64% of those surveyed say they'll spend more online this year, for an average of $298 per shopper. At the top of their lists: music and videos.
