On Sunday AT&T and Nokia cut the price of the Nokia Lumia 900 phone for web buyers to $49.99 with a 2 year commitment. It had been selling at $99.99. With no commitment (but still locked to AT&T) the phone costs $399.99.

[Update: The claim on the AT&T site that the price is "web only" is not accurate. Later in the day we went to an AT&T store and saw the same phone available there for $49.99. See the photo at the bottom of this article.]

The Lumia 900 has received rave reviews from users, but its appeal was tarnished by the Microsoft announcements that Windows Phone 8 would not run on any current Windows Phones, including the Lumia 900. Windows Phone 8 is expected to be available some time in 2012.

Mobile phone price reductions are not uncommon in the US market, but typically they come on older models after new ones have been released. The Lumia is still a top-of-the-line phone.

This lack of an upgrade path devalues all current Windows Phones, which makes discounts reasonable. Microsoft has announced that a Windows Phone 7.8 will be available for current hardware which will incorporate the user interface changes in Windows Phone 8.
