I had the opportunity this week to spend a few days with Nortel's key executives during an analyst meeting that took place at the annual Nortel customer conference known as Global Connect.   Nortel used this session to update the analyst and media community on key focus areas for the company around its UC, professional services, and data portfolio offerings.

Perhaps the most interesting discussion was around Nortel's "Agile Communications Environment" (known as "ACE").  The idea behind ACE is similar to what Avaya currently offers with its "Communications Process Manager", basically to provide a middleware functionality to enable business process integration with communications services, essentially allowing communications services to be integrated into an enterprise SOA.

Nortel's ACE initiative underscores the growing need for application developers to gain an awareness of communications systems and services, as well as for business managers to grow their knowledge of how emerging communications applications can improve top and/or bottom line performance by improving business processes.  The lines around communications services and business process applications continues to blur.
