Notebook Computer Cases Banned At ComdexNotebook Computer Cases Banned At Comdex
Reports that notebook computers would be banned at the huge IT show were exaggerated.
Some recent reports about Comdex security have included the unthinkable: No notebook computers allowed on the show floor. As it turns out, it is indeed unthinkable--and untrue.
Most bags--including notebook-computer carrying cases--are banned from the show floor and from keynotes, but the notebooks themselves are A-OK. (Clear plastic bags will be distributed so attendees won't have to lug all those product spec sheets). Notebook devotees can check their cases at a station near the registration desk, and then carry their computers and necessary papers into the show.
But many decisions regarding security will be made on-site, says Rick Moore, spokesman for conference organizer Key3Media Events Inc. For instance, women can still carry purses and the media and exhibitors will be allowed to tote their notebook computers in the carrying cases. "People have to do business--that's what this show is about," says Moore.
But thanks to the struggling economy and the fallout from Sept. 11, not as many folks will be doing business at the Las Vegas show this year. Moore says attendance is expected to be about 150,000, down from 200,000 last year, and the number of exhibitors will drop to about 1,900 from last year's 2,300.
