Online advertising revenues hit a record $3.1 billion in the third quarter, an industry group said Monday.

The amount of Internet advertising sold represented nearly a 34 percent increase over the same period a year ago, and the first time that quarterly revenues surpassed the $3 billion mark, the Interactive Advertising Bureau said.

Based on current trends, revenues this year could exceed $12 billion, well above last's year's record of $9.6 billion, the IAB said.

The trade group sponsors the quarterly report, which is conducted independently by the New Media Group of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"The third quarter figures are the most impressive we've seen yet," David Silverman, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said in a statement.
